At the moment, it appears unclear whether Palin was a member of the Alaska Independence Party, or merely addressed the 2000 AIP convention while Mayor of Wasilla. The AIP's main goal is a referendum in Alaska on whether it should secede from the United States.
The AIP's website proudly presents a quote from Joe Vogler, it's founder: "I'm an Alaskan, not an American. I've got no use for America or her damned institutions."
For a candidate whose ticket's motto is "Country First," this seems a bit off-message.
UPDATE:
The McCain website:
The Governor did appear at the AIP convention in 2000, when the convention was held in Wasilla. This would seem to be the only decent thing to do, given her responsibilities as Mayor of Wasilla.
The only decent thing to do, eh? So presumably as VP, the only decent thing to do would be to address every convention of separatist kooks who come to DC?

There are other stories on this -- that she and her husband were *members* for two years, I believe. Also, being a member of the Republican party does not exclude her from being a member of the AIP! If I still have the stories in my history, I'll come back with the URLs for you.
