Another
story popped up that simultaneously speaks both to the, shall we say, non-monumental issues she faced as Wasilla mayor and to her ineptitude handling those issues. Apparently one of the biggest issues (and fiascoes) of Palin's tenure as mayor was the construction of a new hockey rink for the local kids. Apparently Palin failed to actually close the deal on the land before the city built roads and installed utilities up to the cite. Upon finding that the site had been sold to somebody else because Palin hadn't closed the deal, she sued, racking up $1.3 million in legal fees (or over $200 for every resident of Wasilla).
"It's too bad that the city of Wasilla didn't do their homework and secure the land before they began construction," said Kathy Wells, a longtime activist here. "She was not your ceremonial mayor; she was in charge of running the city. So it was her job to make sure things were done correctly."
So if being mayor is like being a community organizer, except with responsibilities... what does it say about Palin that she apparently couldn't handle discharging even the minor responsibility of making sure that the city owned land before it started building?
